Poll of the Day

Being someone who’s company has developed Apps for Business users that work on many different tablets keeping abreast of news on the latest tablet comes with the territory. Today amongst many of the other articles I perused I found a blog entry from PC World about the iPad mini and I thought it would be a good poll of the day.

If you are interested in reading the PC world blog the link is: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2013023/apple-ipad-mini-all-the-ipad-at-nearly-half-the-cost.html

I am sure we will be acquirng a few for testing that our current apps work on the smaller iPad format but being that we have also made versions that work on smartphones I don’t see the iPad mini’s size as really being a hurdle. If you are a business and are looking for a solution for your sales force it could definately be an asset but honestly the full size sibling will definately provide less of a shock to employees used to working on laptops.

Last year at Christmas I purchased Kindle Fire’s for my three boys and they love them but I find them just too small to work off of. So I imagine the iPad mini will be strictly for bug testing or when I need to work through a problem and need an angry birds break.

Open Letter to Domino’s -An example of poor programming impacting customer experience!

As a Technology Director I find myself constantly critiquing and sometimes criticizing websites that I interact with in my daily life. This past week I was sick and ordered a few Pizzas from Dominos for my boys so I would be able to spend more quality time feeling sorry for myself on the couch.

(Well ok I order Domino’s once a week every week anyway. And this is what incited me even more.)

I have sent an email in the past as well as mentioning it to the driver but got my concerns shrugged off like it doesn’t really matter. But guess what DOMINO’S it does matter.

In their defense before I get to deep into my primary complaint a lovely woman from my local Domino’s did call me stating that she was passed my complain and offered to put a credit on my account for a future purchase but as I explained to her this problem is affecting many unsuspecting customers not just me. She did insure me that she would pass my concerns along to corporate but then i thought well this is a perfect topic for the blog. It involves technology, customer experience and food…three things I am quite passionate about.

So what is the problem anyway?

Let’s deal with the smaller issue first – false advertising. On their website Domino’s offer 2 medium 2 topping pizzas for $5.99 each. They also offer similar deals that have the same issue. If you login to their site and build your order of two medium two topping pizzas and are observant enough you will see that on each two topping pizza domino’s actually jacks the price up by 3 cents. Here is an example of an order with three pizzas in total, notice that the pizza with no toppings as well as the one with one topping is $5.99 but the one with two toppings is in my cart for $6.02.

So WHAT is the BIG ISSUE?

No I am not one of those lovely elderly folks in the grocery store arguing over 2 cents. I am an educated woman who happens to know a lot about technology who noticed that the promo codes setup in Domino’s e-commerce system is configured incorrectly. It should not add 3 cents to orders that have the appropriate number of toppings. Where in the fine print does it say if you actually want two toppings it is 3 cents extra? Hypothetically if Domino’s has a 1000 customers a day who take advantage of this offer and get only 2 two topping pizzas each at 3 cents over the advertised price that amounts to (1000 x 2) x .03 dollars = 60 dollars x 365 days = 21,900 dollars “stolen from unsuspecting customers”

Still not a tremendous Amount of money but:

1. I am certain Domino’s has more than 1000 customers a day taking advantage of this

2. Most are probably even ordering more than two pizzas.

3. Domino’s corporate had a store call me despite my customer support case stating that I felt this was a very big issue. I am not being taken seriously.

OPEN LETTER TO DOMINO’S

My three children love your pizza for reasons unbeknownst to me. Please correct this issue, apologize to your customers and provide repayment in some form to make up for this human but major mistake. If you would like to speak to me personally about this issue I would be happy to answer any questions you have. I would love to know how you plan to restore your customer’s faith in you.

Sincerely,

Rhianna Albert

Smartphones: putting the best to the test @watoday

I read an article today @watoday written by Ben Grubb the Deputy Technoloy director http://www.watoday.com.au/digital-life/mobiles/smartphones-putting-the-best-to-the-test-20121018-27tjv.html

The article got me thinking about my new iPhone 5 that I love oh so much. It hasn’t always been that way though. For a time before the 4 came out I was having a lot of trouble with ATT my cell phone carrier constantly dropping calls when my iPhone 3Gs would switch from 2 to 3G. I almost invested in a phone by HTC as well as Samsung but in the long wrong decided to remain faithful to Apple and have been happy ever since.

I thought it would be a great topic for today’s poll of the day. So please by all means let me know your thoughts by way of vote and/or comments.

Fiona Apple Review – Huntington NY

Just got back from the Fiona concert at the Paramount. Will write a full review in the next day or so. watch this space for review and pix from the event.

Update 11/6/12:

It has been a few weeks since the show but in that time I was pretty sick, had to take my middle child for oral surgery, faced a hurricane and am now on the eve of a nor’easter. So tonight I am writing the post about the concert that I meant to almost a month ago.

The venue: The Paramount in Huntington, NY Let me just say the venue is intimate, clean, excellent sound, friendly staff (you don’t find that too often in NY venues) and did I say clean? Seriously aside from the garbage in the women’s room needing to be changed at the end of the night because it was overflowing with paper towels even that was immaculate. I will definately be going back there soon!

From a recent press release on there site:

Opened September 30, 2011 this 1,555 capacity live entertainment venue located
in downtown Huntington, Long Island, features concerts, boxing, comedy,
community and other special events.  Booked by Live Nation, the Paramount has
hosted over 150 events in its first year of operation and quickly established
itself as the premier music venue on Long Island. Some recent acts to take the
stage include Pitbull, Taking Back Sunday, The Pixies, Elvis Costello, Warren
Haynes, Willie Nelson, Brand New, Goo Goo Dolls, Primus, Marilyn Manson, Korn,
The Wanted, The Script, Panic! At the Disco and many, more.

Fiona:

Well what can I say about her? The woman’s voice was amazing. It was off key only when she wanted it to be and it still held the same passion as it did when she first came on the scene. She was dressed in a black satiny sort of frock that was a wrinkled mess but still managed to look posh on her. As always she was pale, thin and anything but fragile as she belted out tunes like shadowboxer. She moved aroun from just singing, to making love to the piano, to banging on a drum.

Overall a really solid performance. My main gripes if you can call them that was that she seemed to be in a bad mood ( a vibe confirmed  later by someone I spoke with in the founder’s room who had spoken with her pre-show) and that maybe as a result did not come out for an encore (many fans were disheartened by this and cheered and cheered calling her back untill the staff turned the lights on.)

Her band was very talented two that stood out was the guy playing the standup BASS and the goddess on the DRUMS. I wish I knew who the were or what bands they play in when not with FIONA. If any one knows please tell me!

The images of Fiona performing are not great quality because despite having myself and another blogger there neither of us thought to try to get a press pass and bring my Nikon D3100 (which by the way has 1,280 on the nikonusa.com site and an average star rating of 4.7 thanks to an excellent product, a great BazaarVoice implementation, and a RightNow CX marketing campaign set up by me before I left Nikon.) to shoot it properly.
